In the Louisville area, gutters usually need cleaning at least twice a year. Timing matters as much as frequency.
Late fall: the big one
Wait until most leaves have dropped - usually mid-November into December - so one cleaning catches the bulk of it. Cleaning too early in October can mean doing it twice.
Spring: after the seed pods
Maples, sweetgums and other trees drop seeds and pods in spring, right before storm season. A spring cleaning keeps gutters clear for heavy April and May rains.
Signs your gutters need cleaning now
- Water spilling over the edge during rain
- Plants or seedlings growing in the gutter
- Gutters sagging under the weight of wet debris
- Water stains on siding or puddles along the foundation
